What is redacted text?

Redacted text is the classified-document look: words replaced by solid black bars. This generator recreates it with the Unicode full-block character (█, U+2588) and its lighter variants, so the bars behave like regular text. You can copy them, paste them into any app, and they will render without a special font.

Is this real redaction?

For the text you generate here, yes. The original characters are replaced, not hidden underneath, so pasting the result shares nothing about what you typed. The "uniform bars" mode goes one step further and hides even the length of each word.

Screenshots and photos are a different story. Covering text in an image with a low-quality tool can leave it recoverable, which is why some redacted images can be unredacted. To black out text in an image safely, use the Redacted image editor: it draws a solid box over the pixels and strips the file's metadata, all locally in your browser.

FAQ

Where can I paste redacted text?

Anywhere normal text works: Discord, X, WhatsApp, Slack, email, Google Docs, forums, or a meme caption. The bars are ordinary Unicode characters, not images.

Is this a redacted font?

No font is needed. The generator replaces your characters with the Unicode full-block character (█), so the result displays correctly everywhere without installing anything.

Can someone recover the original text?

Not from the generated text. The original characters are replaced, not covered, so there is nothing underneath to reveal. Just make sure you do not paste the original text alongside it.

How do I redact text inside an image or screenshot?

Use the free Redacted image editor: open the screenshot, drag a black box over the text, and download the result. It runs in your browser and the image is never uploaded.
