How to use a black bar PNG
Drag the PNG into your slide, document, meme, or design tool and place it over the text or detail you want to hide. The solid bars are pure black and fully opaque, so nothing shows through. The pixelated and blurred bars give the same censored look in a softer style, and the stamps work as a classic "classified document" overlay.
When a PNG on top is not enough
A bar placed over text in an editable file is just a layer. If you share the slide, PDF, or design file itself, anyone can select the bar and delete it. That is one of the common ways redacted images get unredacted. Two safe options:
- Export a flattened image (PNG or JPEG) after placing the bar, and share only that export.
- Use the Redacted editor to draw the black box straight into the image pixels. It also strips metadata such as GPS location from the export, and everything happens locally in your browser.
Prefer text you can paste?
If you want black bars inside a message rather than an image, the redacted text generator turns any text into █████ bars you can copy and paste into Discord, X, WhatsApp, or a document.
FAQ
Are these PNGs free to use?
Yes. Every file on this page is free for personal and commercial use, with no attribution required.
What size black bar should I use?
Match the height of the text you are covering, then stretch the width as needed. Solid black scales cleanly, so a 600 by 90 bar works for most slides and documents. If you need an exact size, use the generator on this page.
Is the bar pure black?
Yes. The black bars are solid #000000 at full opacity, with no transparency over the covered area and no compression artifacts.
Can someone remove the bar and read the text underneath?
It depends on where you put it. If you place a bar in an editable file (a slide, PDF, or document), anyone with the file can delete the bar. Export a flattened image, or use the Redacted editor to draw the box into the image pixels themselves.
How do I put a black bar over text in a photo?
The easiest way is the free Redacted editor: open the photo, drag a box over the text, and download the result. It runs in your browser, the image is never uploaded, and metadata is stripped from the export.
