Redaction safety guide

Can redacted images be unredacted?

Sometimes, yes. It depends on how the image was redacted. A true redaction replaces the sensitive pixels in the exported image. A weak edit may only hide them visually or leave clues behind. This guide covers the known ways redactions fail, and how to redact so there is nothing to recover.

When redacted images can be recovered

Light blur and pixelation

Blur and pixelation reduce detail, they do not remove it. Public research tools have reconstructed pixelated text by comparing the colored blocks against rendered guesses of the original characters, and light blur over short, high-contrast text can sometimes be read outright or sharpened enough to guess. The risk grows when the block size is small, the font is common, and the hidden text is short (a password, a code, a name).

Cropped photos that keep the original

In 2023, a bug known as “acropalypse” showed that Google Pixel’s screenshot editor and the Windows Snipping Tool had been saving edited images with the original data still inside the file. A cropped-out or blacked-out region could be partially restored from the leftover bytes. The lesson applies broadly: an editor must fully re-encode the exported file, not just append changes to the original.

Semi-transparent pens and highlighters

Scribbling over text with a marker tool is one of the most common redaction failures. In many apps, including phone markup editors, the pen or highlighter is not fully opaque, and a single pass rarely is. Raising the brightness, contrast, or exposure of the shared image can make the “hidden” text readable again. If you use a markup pen, go over the area several times, or better, use a shape tool with a solid fill.

Editable files that keep layers

A black rectangle drawn over text in a PDF, slide deck, or design file is a layer, not a redaction. Anyone who opens the file can move or delete the box, and in PDFs the text underneath often remains selectable: click, drag, copy, paste, and the “redacted” content appears. Several court filings have leaked exactly this way. Always export a flattened image and share that instead of the editable file.

Metadata and embedded previews

Image files can carry EXIF metadata: GPS location, capture time, camera and device details, and sometimes an embedded thumbnail of the image. If the thumbnail is not regenerated after editing, it can show the unredacted original. Location data can also leak more than the picture itself. A safe export strips metadata entirely.

Safer ways to redact an image

Blur versus black box

Blur can be fine for low-risk social sharing, but it is not the strongest privacy method. For passwords, legal details, financial information, addresses, IDs, or private messages, use a black box. The blur vs black box comparison goes deeper on when each is appropriate.

Do “blacked-out text remover” tools work?

Tools that promise to remove a black box or reveal blacked-out text only work when the redaction was weak in the first place. They succeed against semi-transparent highlighter marks, edits saved in a format that keeps the original layer, or files that still contain an unedited preview thumbnail. If the black box was rendered into the exported pixels, there is no hidden text left in the file for any remover to find.

The same logic applies to unredacting a photo: if the original pixels were replaced, no online tool can bring them back. If you need the original again, that is what your own original file is for. Redact a copy and keep the original private.

How Redacted helps

Redacted is built so none of the failure modes above apply. Masks are rendered into the pixels of a newly encoded file, the export contains no leftover data from the original, and metadata (including GPS location and embedded previews) is stripped. Everything runs locally in your browser, so there is no server copy of the unredacted image either. Open the editor and redact a copy of your photo.

FAQ

Can someone remove a black box from an exported image?

If the black box was rendered into the exported pixels, the covered detail is not visible in that file.

Can blurred text be recovered?

Sometimes enough detail remains to guess short or high-contrast text. Use a black box for sensitive text.

Can pixelated text be read?

Sometimes. Research tools have reconstructed pixelated text when the blocks are small and the font is predictable. Use coarse blocks, or a black box for anything sensitive.

Are phone markup pens safe for redaction?

Only if the ink is fully opaque. Many markup pens and highlighters are semi-transparent, and a brightness or contrast boost can reveal the text underneath. Use a solid shape or a dedicated redaction tool instead.

How do I unredact a photo I redacted myself?

You cannot recover it from the redacted export. Keep your original file and redact a copy, so you always have the unedited version.

Does deleting metadata matter?

Yes. Metadata can include camera, location, and device information, and sometimes an embedded preview of the original image. Redacted strips metadata from exported images.
