How to blur a face
- Open the photo in Redacted.
- Drag a selection over the face, or click Detect faces to find every face automatically.
- Pick a round shape if it fits the face better.
- Choose the blur or pixelate mask.
- Download the anonymised image.
Better face anonymisation
Cover slightly more than the face itself. Hairline, ears, jaw, clothing, and nearby context can still make someone recognisable. For stronger privacy, use pixelation or a solid black shape instead of a light blur.
Redact a face, not just blur it
Blur is one of five covers, and face redaction is the same job done with a stronger one. Pick by how much the privacy matters:
- Solid box over the whole face. The strongest option. Use it when the person must not be identifiable.
- Pixelation. The familiar mosaic. Use large blocks, because small ones leave too much structure behind.
- Blur. Softer and more natural in family photos. Keep the strength high, since a light blur can be partly undone.
- Emoji. Friendly for social posts, and it fully replaces the pixels underneath.
- Black bar over the eyes. The classified-document look. Good for tone, weaker for privacy, because the jaw, hair, and build stay visible.
Why a bar over the eyes is not enough
Identification does not rely on eyes alone. Hairline, jaw shape, ears, clothing, tattoos, and the background can all narrow a person down, and reverse image search does not need a full face to find the original. If you want genuine anonymity rather than a stylistic effect, cover the whole head, then check the rest of the frame for name badges, screens, documents, house numbers, and reflections.

What does it mean to redact a face?
Redacting a face means covering it so the person cannot be identified from the image. Any of the masks above does it. A solid box or heavy pixelation is the safest, and the cover is flattened into the exported file rather than sitting on top as a removable layer.
Can I cover every face at once?
Yes. Click Detect faces and every face found is covered in one pass. You can then restyle, resize, or delete any of them, and drag a box over anything the detector missed.
Can I blur several faces?
Yes. Add one selection per face.
Does Redacted detect faces automatically?

Is face blur reversible?
A light blur may still leak some visual detail. Use heavy pixelation or a solid cover when privacy matters.
