Pixelate an image online
Pixelate a photo, a face, or any part of an image before you share it. The classic mosaic effect turns the selected area into chunky blocks so the detail underneath is no longer readable. Redacted runs in your browser, so the image is never uploaded.
How to pixelate an image
- Open the editor and drop, paste, or select your photo.
- Drag over the part you want to pixelate.
- Pick the pixelate mask in the toolbar.
- Adjust the conceal level to make the blocks coarser or finer.
- Download the pixelated image.
Pixelate part of an image
You do not have to pixelate the whole picture. Drag a selection over just the area you want to hide: a face, a name, a license plate, an address, or a paragraph of text. Add as many selections as you need, and mix pixelation with blur or black boxes on different areas.
Pixelate a face
For faces, use a round selection so the mosaic follows the head naturally. You can also click Detect faces and let the on-device AI find every face in the photo for you, then apply the pixelate mask to all of them at once. Cover a little more than the face itself, since hairline, ears, and jaw can still be recognisable.
Pixelate or blur?
Both hide detail, but they look and behave differently. Pixelation replaces the area with solid blocks and is harder to reverse than a light blur, which is why it is the usual choice for censoring faces and text. Blur looks softer and suits casual photos. When the hidden information really matters, use a solid black box, which removes it completely.

Redacted is a website, not an app you install. Open it in Safari or Chrome on your phone, paste or pick a photo, and pixelate it the same way as on a computer. Nothing is uploaded from your device.

Can pixelation be reversed?
A coarse pixelation destroys the detail in the covered area, so it cannot simply be undone by a viewer. Very fine pixelation over known text can sometimes be guessed by specialised tools, so use large blocks, or a black box when the stakes are high.
Can I pixelate a screenshot?
Yes. Copy the screenshot and paste it straight into the editor with Ctrl/Cmd + V, pixelate the sensitive parts, then download or copy the result.
